I came across Pearsonified from the link at the bottom of Copyblogger giving him credit for their webpage design.  It turns out Chris P offers a free versions of the old Copyblogger Theme.  I figured the page was just for promoting themes Chris P made, and I noticed he hasn’t posted since Feb 2009.

After coming across several sites using Chris’s themes, I decided to come back and dig into his blog a little bit.  I’m so glad I did!

His personal theme is lit up with bold colors drawing your eyes to navigation points.  Every page I start digging into, I go straight for the popular posts and recommended posts because they tend to let me know if I’m going to find the information useful or not.

His popular posts (easily found in the right column) are broken down into: Must Reads, Improve Your Blog, and Worth a Look.  The titles are magnetic.  I’ve already found myself frantically reading through every single post I can get my eyes on and trying to implement his tips as quickly as possible.

SEO for Everybody and Design Tips for where the rubber meets the road are two of the most useful and practical resources I have found for blogging.

Chris’s writing style is shockingly personal.  It is extremely difficult to come across as causal when talking about technical topics, but you’ll crack as smile frequently reading Personified.  He has a lot of code available for download or even a simple cut and paste if needed.

Very cool. I’m pretty happy with frugal on my site currently but I may end up trying this theme for one of my other blogs.

I really wanted a 3 column theme, so the old Copyblogger theme doesn’t really work for me. If I were using a 2 column theme, the Copyblogger free theme would be my first choice for free themes.

We actually talked about your theme via e-mail. You’re lucky you got it at the price you did ;-) It seems to be a pretty powerful and useful theme.

Thanks Blake, I am also practicing with theme on my local Wordpress because I need some SEO friendly theme for my blog, Thesis is one of my own personal favorite , but its customization require some time, I’ll have a look on this theme.

    Blake Waddill Reply:

Thesis is without a doubt the most popular premier theme among top bloggers. There is probably a reason for that. Right now I’m using a free theme to learn my way around CSS and PHP. I’ll probably upgrade to thesis in 2-3 months.

I was using Affiliate Theme but it wasn’t all that great. Felt like I threw away 93$. So now I’m using a free theme called mystique. It’s customizable with either 1, 2 or 3 columns and lots more. When i feel confident again I’ll purchase a theme from WooThemes. They offer great themes and great service.

    Blake Waddill Reply:

The theme I’m currently using is also a free theme. I’m no CSS expert, but I have been able to edit my theme to get my site’s appearance to be a little closer to what I was aiming for.

I think long term going to something like Thesis is definitely a worthy investment. The code is need and efficient. They are constantly updating, so if something major changes on the net or with browsers, you won’t have to worry about your theme being broken without support.

Brian Clark from Copyblogger did a really cool video explaining how Thesis can greatly improve your SEO. I’m not convinced that you can’t do that with your own theme, but without extensive knowledge of CSS, PHP, and the like, I have a hard time believing someone can optimize as well as Thesis does.
